Michael Phelps Bio (Age)

Michael Fred Phelps ll was born on the 30th of June 1985, he grew up in Towson and attended schools such as Rodgers Forge Elementary School, Dumbarton Middle School and Towson High School. He finished from high school in 2003 but had been diagnosed with ADHD while he was in school. His family subsequently encouraged him to pick up swimming as an outlet for some of his energy. At first, the young Phelps was afraid to put his face under water but he quickly conquered that fear. Michael Phelps began swimming at the age of 7 and by 10 years of age, had already won the national 100m butterfly title for members of his age group. He did this in style as he created a new national record to go with it.

Phelps subsequently joined the North Baltimore Aquatic Club where he began a lifelong partnership with illustrious coach, Bob Bowman. Under Bowman’s tutelage, Phelps qualified for the Sydney 2000 Olympics at the age of 15 making him the youngest male to make the U.S. swim team in at least 70 years. At the Olympics, Phelps did not win any medals but this did not dampen his spirits. He worked harder and in 2001 won gold in the 200m butterfly at the World Championships. He created a new world record in the process as the youngest male athlete (15 years and 9 months) to break a world swimming record.

Michael Phelps did not relent and for the next decade (2002 -2012), he won many more medals and broke more records. He won 13 gold medals and 3 silver medals at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Pan Pacific Championships; 25 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 1 bronze at the 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011 World Aquatic Championships. Phelps also extended his exploits to the Olympics, winning 6 gold and 2 bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics; 8 gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 4 gold and 2 silver at the London 2012 Games.

Following his unprecedented success, Michael Phelps became disillusioned with swimming, he no longer found joy in it and retired from the sport in 2012. The Baltimore native however made a triumphant comeback in May 2014, winning the 100m butterfly in a national meet. Phelps subsequently represented his country at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning 5 gold and 1 silver. He announced his retirement again after Rio. Michael Phelps holds so many records, in fact, he holds the Guinness record for most records set by an athlete! Other records are – the individual with the most Olympic medals (28) and the most Olympic gold medals (23).

The swimmer hails from a family of five. His father’s name is Michael Fred while his mother’s name is Deborah Sue. His mom is a school principal while his father works in law enforcement. Phelps has also created swimsuit lines in collaboration with swim gear manufacturers such as Aqua Sphere and Speedo.

Height and Weight

Phelps is 6 feet 4 inches tall (1.93m) and weighs 88kg (194lbs). He has some peculiar physical attributes (comparable to different parts of a fish as well as a ship) which have contributed to his incredible success in the pool. They include a long slim torso, long arms (6 feet 7 inches) and short legs. His long arms basically act as an effective paddle while his large-sized feet (size 14) are akin to flippers.
