On Saturday, 27th April, Barcelona won their fifth La Liga title in five years after defeating Levante 1-0, thanks to a brilliant goal from Lionel Messi.
Barca clinched the title with three games to play, having pulled
an amazing season run and currently are nine points head of Atletico Madrid,
who Barcelona has also defeated in a head to head encounter.
Here are five games that helped Barcelona claim the La Liga title
for the 26th time in their history.
This match was the first El Classico in 11 years without Messi
and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former was out on injury, giving Luis Suarez the opportunity
to shine brightly in his absence, scoring a hat-trick at Camp Nou.
Messi was just back from injury and as always it was on him to
take Barcelona ahead in the league. However, the Argentinian had only scored
one goal in five games for FCB and his form was in doubt.
Messi surprisingly rose to the occasion and scored his 50th
career goal in a riveting 4-2 defeat of Sevilla.
After knocking Madrid out of the Copa del Rey, Barcelona
successfully ended their rival’s run for the La Liga title.
Many had believed Barcelona’s shot at the title would be drenched
with danger after Villarreal successfully held Barcelona at 4-2 at regulation
Two goals from Messi and Suarez in the 91st and 93rd minutes
respectively restored Barca’s hopes as they moved up to the top of the table.
Yet again, the duo of Suarez and Messi brought mayhem to Diego Simeone’s men as
Barcelona picked up a straight 3 point win, sending them 11 points clear with
seven games left in the league.
