She is the granddaughter of Dr. Harvey Cushing who is a Pulitzer Prize awarded author and is popularly referred to as the ‘Father of American Neurosurgery.’ She is also a direct descendant of John Jay who was the first-ever Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

She grew up alongside her brother whose name is Stanley Grafton Mortimer III. Following the divorce of her parents, her mother got married to a very wealthy man named William Paley, while her father got married to Kathleen Mortimer. Amanda Burden’s career began as early as the 1980s when she received mentorship from William H. Whyte, an Urbanologist and the two of them worked side by side on his ‘Project for Public Spaces.’ At this time, Amanda was working as an architect in a firm called Gruzen and Partners.

Moving up the professional ladder, Amanda became the Vice President for Planning and Design within the Battery Park City Authority and while she occupied this office, she maintained the development and subsequent implementation of the design guidelines for the site. The site measured 92 acres and while at it, she also coordinated the design of all open spaces including the waterfront esplanade. She has had quite a number of design projects in the city of New York and some of them include the Red Hook Community Justice Centre and the Middletown Community Court.

In the year 1990, Amanda Burden was appointed by Andrew Stein, the then president of the New York City Council to serve on the New York City Planning Commission. Taking up this appointment, she joined the commission and served as commissioner for 11 years (2002- 2013) under the administration of Mayor Bloomberg.
