Supporters of the Ondo state governorship candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu and that of the Peoples Democreatic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, clashed in Oba Akoko area of Ondo State, on Wednesday.
A statement by the Spokesperson of Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organization, Olabode Richard Olatunde alleged that supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede attacked the convoy of his principal at Oba Akoko in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, Akeredolu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign train was on the way to Ikare-Akoko in continuation of the local government campaign rally “when the PDP struck and attacked the convoy of the campaign train”. He disclosed that the branded campaign vehicle donated to the Akeredolu campaign by Ambassador Sola Iji was set ablaze by the hoodlums.
“The driver of the vehicle sustained bodily injury and now receiving treatment at a government hospital”, Olatunde added
But in a swift reaction, the PDP has said it was APC supporters who were in the convoy of Akeredolu that attacked the campaign train of Jegede when both convoys met at Oba-Akoko in Akoko South West. The Umbrella party added that 10 campaign vehicles in the convoy of Jegede were vandalised in the attack.
According to the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kennedy Peretei, the attackers who were hooded stormed the location after alighting from the convoy of the governor. He alleged that neither Akeredolu nor the police operatives in the governor’s convoy did anything to stop the attackers.
“Everybody was taken by surprise. Aketi people were passing before they stopped abruptly, and before you could say Jack, these masked men rushed down and started breaking Jegede’s vehicles.
He added that “Jegede was at the palace of Oloba of Oba, Oba Nathaniel Adegoroye, the traditional ruler of the town, where he had gone to pay homage as part of his campaign visits to the town”, when the attackers allegedly struck..
When contacted, the Police Spokesperson in the state, Tee-Leo Ikoro who confirmed the attack said that mobile policemen have been deployed to the area on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Salami.
