The Seriki of Arewa Community, in Asaba, Delta State, Alhaji Ibrahim Babagero has called for the setting up of a herder/farmer committee in the 25 local government councils of the State.
He said the committee would interface with both farmers and herdsman to stem the tide of violence.
Alhaji Babagero, stated this while speaking with reporters in Asaba, the Stste Capital.
He said that such committee most be chaired by the Council chairman, and made up of other credible persons from both sides to achieve the desired peace in the land.
Babagero maintained that the committee will go to predominantly farming rural areas to mediate between farmers and Fulani herdsmen.
He said the committee must liaise with the traditional rulers in such communities, the security agencies, farmers and herdsmen to enthrone peace, love and orderliness.
Babagero advised that if such committees are set up any Fulani herdsman whose cattle destroys crops should be made to pay for such crops and also farmers do same but should henceforth refrain from killing cows belonging to Fulani pastoralists.
He said if the committee is inaugurated, the two parties are bound to embrace the needed peace.
He described Deltans as “a very nice, accommodating and friendly people” saying, there is no regret living in the State.
